Within the ScienceStim project, open source (GNU General Public License) C++ libraries for Linux and Windows will be developed which allow a PC-based communication with medical electrical stimulators for muscle and nerve stimulation. By the realisation of this project, the scientific research in the field of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) of paralysed muscles shall be enhanced. The existence of open communication protocols and user interfaces in form of libraries simplifies the realisation of complex stimulation patterns and control algorithms on a PC-based platform.
Goal of the project is to provide a documentation of the communication protocols as well as user friendly C++ libraries. Additionally to this, open source application programs using the libraries shall be provided. At the moment, an Matlab/Simulink interface and a simple test program, for demonstrating the protocol functionality, are available for some stimulators.
